What to watch: It’s hard to identify the favorite in this one. Hillsdale’s schedule may have been more difficult, and the Falcons may have a better “best win,” but Malvern has won seven straight since a disappointing second half against Garaway, and even in that loss, the Hornets showed an ability to hang with a great team at least for a while. This would be the signature win head coach Matt Chiurco hoped the Garaway game would be. Garaway is in the third round of the Division V playoffs against 12-0 South Range. … Malvern and Hillsdale both have prolific quarterbacks. Malvern's 6-5 senior Jared Witherow has a big edge in experience. Hillsdale’s 6-2 Kael Lewis is just a sophomore, but in his first start, he set a school record with six TD passes in a 42-14 rout of Black River, and he has built on that. … Hillsdale’s playoff wins, both at home, were 55-12 over Fairport and 43-14 over Windham. Malvern’s, also at home, were 40-26 over Lucas and 42-14 over Lowellville. Lewis went 13-for-17 for 351 yards against Windham. … Malvern and Hillsdale (near the Ashland County town of Jeromesville) are 64 miles apart. … Hillsdale’s only loss came in Week 10, 45-12 to Division V Norwayne, with the Wayne County League championship on the line. Hillsdale’s loss was similar to Malvern’s setback against Garaway, in that both teams lost the line-of-scrimmage battle. Both Malvern and Hillsdale are emphasizing physical play this week. … The Falcons’ best win was 35-30 over Dalton in Game 5. Dalton remains alive in the Division VI playoffs … Former Hillsdale QB Trevor Cline, 31, is in his seventh year as program’s head coach. He was 24 when he was hired in 2018. … The Falcons finished 2023 with a 28-14 loss to Lucas in the first round. In 2024, Lucas lost 26-8 at Hillsdale in the regular season and 40-26 at Malvern in the playoffs. … Hillsdale was 7-5 in 2022, falling 42-41 to Danville in the second round. … Chiurco sees Malvern’s run game as a key. He said the Hornets become “more dynamic” when they mix effective runs from Drake Hutchison and Julius Gore with their assorted pass-game weapons. … RB Owen Sloan has had some big games for Hillsdale. … The winner will advance to the Region 27 championship game against the winner of a game between Warren JFK (10-2) and Cuyahoga Heights (7-4).
